An exciting September for the Opera Club with Boris Godunow
A special lunch with Canadian mezzo-soprano Kady Evanyshyn got the month of September off to an exciting start for the Opera Club , while our group outing to her latest opera , Mussorgsky ’ s Boris Godunow , brought this most recent mini-project to a most satisfying conclusion a few weeks later . “ By transitioning the stage design and costumes from the sixteenth century of the Smuta ( Time of Troubles ) to the rise and fall of the nineteenth-century Soviet Union , director Frank Castorf left not only his mark but also brought some confusion to the plot . Luckily , Anna Sizorina ’ s excellent introductory slides kept me grounded in the story . The Castorf twist , coupled with Kent Nagano ’ s outstanding musical directing , made for a wonderful evening .” Carol Harbers
