the Garden present colorful blooms, as one would
expect-of daffodils, crocuses, and spring flowers--but
surprises with water-lily ponds and horse-chestnut
trees (with dramatic red blooms). Four greenhouses
contain tropical and sub-tropical varieties, cacti,
cycads, and a host of rare flora.

From January through March, camellias on dis-
play attract more than 80,000 fans of special Japan-
ese, Italian, hybrid, and Higo varieties.
Both locals and the travel-weary can enjoy the
distraction of symmetrical gardens and artfully-
placed statues here, amidst lively red squirrels and
croaking frogs. The Hornbeam pergolas add charm;
this is a romantic venue. The Garden hosts one mil-
lion visitors annually.
Concerts, conferences, and events are held in the
Garden complex. Dogs are not permitted. Next door
is Cologne’s Zoo and Terrarium (admission charges
apply).
After visiting Cologne’s (Köln’s) main attraction,
it’s Dom, begun in 1248, one of the world’s great
churches, take time for reflection within a garden.
