On the eastern side of the Kremlin are Red
Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum,
and the GUM Department Store. To the west are the
Lenin Library, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, and
the Old State University. To the south flows the
Moscow River. Although Moscow fans out from four
rings, the majority of symbolic sites can be covered
easily in a walking tour of the first ring.
If traveling solo, one can readily hire a guide well-
versed in history, art, and architecture. Establish,
beforehand, the cost and currency to be used.
Moscow’s 12.4 million citizens (2017) are helpful and
proud of their city, the 2nd most populous in Europe.
Read before visiting, to better appreciate Moscow’s
past, onion-layered, as are the domes of its
churches.
Dress conservatively, address others respectfully,
and avoid loud conversations with English-speaking
companions. Moscow (Moskva) comprises 12
administrative okrugs (areas) further divided into 123

ian, but a large number of

ous ethnic backgrounds. In 2016,
Moscow held third place as home
to billionaires, with only New York
City and Hong Kong having more.
