Foot and Shoe Size Awareness
By Nell V . Blake , DPM
Abstract Objective
To demonstrate and create public awareness of foot size and shoe size at community events .
Methods
Foot length and width were measured during four Pennsylvania community events , occurring in 2014 and 2016 . Participants gave verbal consent and provided us their current shoe size . Three questions about foot measurements were asked of the participants at the events . From the type of data collected , our statistician suggested using Intraclass correlation and Kappa to analyze the data . Therefore , no actual level of significance was obtained , only the statistics that were compared to a scale ( 0 = no agreement , 1 = perfect agreement ) and a confidence interval around the data were obtained . A total of 222 participants were enrolled from the community events .
Results
Participant shoe length was strongly correlated with foot size measured . Participant shoe width was rarely in agreement with the foot size width measured using The Brannock Device ®.
Conclusions
Our study revealed that participants were knowledgeable of their shoe length but were not knowledgeable of their shoe width . Participants realized the importance of foot measurement for a proper shoe size .
