14 | Footwear and insole design features
that reduce neuropathic plantar forefoot
ulcer risk in people with diabetes: a
systematic literature review
BY SAYED AHMED, ALEX BARWICK, PAUL BUTTERWORTH
& SUSAN NANCARROW
This research is presented to us by a group
of Australian researchers. They conducted
a literature review which searched through
research articles published from 1987 to 2019
that studied shoes or foot orthoses being
used to address issues in people with diabetic
neuropathy. Many of the articles discuss
methods to reduce plantar forefoot pressure
to reduce ulceration risk. There are interesting
conclusions across the board and plenty of
possibilities pointed out to guide future research.
