Electric rates are higher in the summer because keeping homes and businesses
cool requires more electricity to be used than during the spring, fall or winter.
To make sure greater demand is met, power plants that run less often throughout
the year are utilized, leading to higher-cost fuel and maintenance expenses.
Because the additional costs are only accrued during the summer, they aren’t
included in winter rates.
This year’s residential summer rate is $0.0858 per kilowatt-hour. View commercial
summer rates, which vary by customer type, online at LES.com/business/rates.
May is National Electrical Safety Month
LES is joining with Electrical Safety Foundation International for National Electrical
Safety Month, a yearly campaign to help reduce electrically-related fatalities, injuries
and property loss through education.
Throughout May, LES will share electrical safety messages and tips, featuring
special ESFI content, on Facebook and Twitter.
Electrical safety awareness and education among consumers, families, employees
and communities helps prevent electrical fires, injuries and fatalities. For ESFI’s
complete collection of National Electrical Safety Month resources and information
on using them in your community, visit ESFI.org.
DID YOU KNOW?
Because we’re locally owned, we’ve made an annual payment in lieu of tax back to local governments every year since we
were founded in 1966. It’s our version of property taxes and fees, representing five percent of retail electric revenue from
the cities we serve, and it’s distributed back into those communities.
For 2018, LES’ payment in lieu of tax is $12.9 million and will be distributed to Lincoln Public Schools, Lancaster County
and the cities of Lincoln and Waverly. Since its inception, LES’ payments in lieu of tax have totaled nearly $286 million for
the Lincoln area.
