DID YOU KNOW? Public power is not-for-profit, which means we have no outside influences, like stockholders who may not even live in our service area. Customers of public power own their electric utility and receive good value for the dollars they spend on electricity, paying bills based solely on cost-of-service, not corporate profit. Nebraska is the ONLY state in the country run entirely on public power. Investing in lightbulbs is a bright idea The cost of lighting your home makes up a large chunk of your electric bill, but you can reduce those energy costs significantly by switching to more efficient, ENERGY STAR ® qualified light bulbs. Technology continues to improve and the marketplace is shifting to better alternatives to conventional incandescent lightbulbs. Compact fluorescent lights last six to 10 times longer and use 70-75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, while light emitting diode, or LED, bulbs last 15 to 20 times longer and use 85-90% less energy. Both CFLs and LEDs are designed to save, with longer lifespans and lower energy use. They come in a variety of styles, depending on the bulb’s intended use. over its lifetime than by the sticker on the box. Also remember, due to containing a small amount of mercury, CFL bulbs require special disposal after use. When deciding which bulbs to purchase, it’s important to look at both the long-and short-term costs. As you can see in the table below, the true cost of a lightbulb can be more accurately measured Bulb Life (in hours) Typical Life (in years) Energy Use Electricity used over 25,000 hours The table below compares the energy usage and lifespan of incandescent lightbulbs along with CFL and LED bulbs:* Incandescent Bulbs CFL Bulbs LED Bulbs 1,200 hours 10,000 hours 25,000 hours 1 year 6-10 year 15-20 year 60W 13W 9W 1,500 KWh 325 KWh 225 KWh *Sources: energystar.gov and energy.gov
