Myth of the Moment – Obstacle Courses - Be Water Wise – Heat Illness

Children were banned from riding at a donkey derby

The reality
We recently heard that HSE had banned children from riding donkeys in a donkey derby and so had to be replaced with inflatable sheep . This was news to us .
In reality the change appears to have been due to the cost of the insurance premium . HSE had no involvement at all . Other donkey derbies took place around the country without any problems .
If you ' re organising a public event , it ' s wise to look for an insurer who specialises in this kind of policy , talk with them if the standard terms cause difficulty and plan properly so that the risks are responsibly - and sensibly managed .

Obstacle Courses

Activity Supervisors must be competent . This means that they have completed an RAPTC run “ Obstacle Course Supervisors Course ”!

Be Water Wise

Cadets or Civilians “ must ” fill out a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire ( PARQ ) certifying that they are in good health .
A thorough Risk Assessment ( RA ) must take place prior to the start of the activity . The Hazards and Control Measures should be recorded on standard Form 5010a . Be aware that many DTEs also require an EASP / EAM to support this .
Regrettably , training involving water has been either the cause of ( or contributing factor to ) a number of injuries ( and even deaths ) of service and cadet personnel in recent years . ( continued on page 2 )
