“It made things less stressful,” Bowman
said. “The room was spacious and comfortable
and the nurses took great care of us the
entire stay. It was a great experience being a
first-time mom.”
Newsweek worked with The Leapfrog
Group to determine the hospitals offering
the best maternity care. The Leapfrog
Group is a national nonprofit organization
that reports on the safety and quality performance
of U.S. health care facilities. The recognition
considers standards of excellence in
maternity care, including low rates of C-section,
episiotomy and early elective deliveries,
and following specific protocols to protect
mothers and babies.
“We strive to put patients first and apply
excellence in all that we do,” said Cumberland
Medical Center Chief Administrative
Officer David Bunch. “This award confirms
that our staff and physicians are delivering
high-quality care for mothers and their newborns
each and every day at CMC. It is an
absolute honor to see them nationally recognized
by Newsweek as a leader in maternity
care.”
The hospital provides free educational
childbirth classes to help better prepare
mothers and families prior to their delivery.

feeding.
The community’s obstetrics medical staff
includes Andy Szaflarski, MD, at Cumberland
Medical Group, Smith, and Brad Leath,
MD.
Smith operates a private practice in
Crossville, William E. Smith Obstetrics and
Gynecology, and recently welcomed Leath
to his team.
“The practice has grown to the point I
can’t provide the level of care I want for all
the women,” he said. “I’ve been looking and
praying, and we were able to get Dr. Leath
to join us.”
The Tennessee Department of Health has
also recently awarded CMC’s Labor and
Delivery team for consistently meeting the
state’s Newborn Screening standards to help
identify conditions that can affect a child’s
long-term health or survival. Screenings
completed shortly after birth can help identify
genetic, endocrine, and metabolic disorders,
as well as hearing loss and congenital
heart defects.
“I’m honored to know and work with the
team at CMC,” Smith said. “They want to
excel and glorify the work we do — everything
that’s good, I lay at His feet.”
