The hamburger originated in Germany - in the town of Hamburg, where it was then brought over to America by immigrants around 1800. It was invented when a man put a beet patty between two pieces of bread with an onion, and served the "burger" with a pickle on the side.
German Cuisine
BACKGROUND
Bratkartoffeln may sound foriegn at first, but it really just means fried potatoes! We have the same dish here in the US. Germans generally prepare theirs with diced bacon and fried tomatoes, not so different from America. Another food we take for granted is the jelly donut. It is known in Germany as a berliner pfannkuche. And we can't forget the sausages! A common type in America is knackwurst, (knockwurst) but Germany has over 1,500 kinds. (wikipedia.org)
THE HAMBURGER
German culture has many components, but one that is less commonly known is their food. Germans tend to eat heavy and hearty meals that include ample portions of meat and bread. Many American dishes are very similar to German cuisine. (lifeintheusa.com)
COOKING CONNECTIONS
WHY SO SIMILAR?
German is the largest ancestral group of the country- there are about 50 million German-Americans. When Germans began immigrating in the 1680's, they brought over much of their culture and traditions. (This, of course, includes food.) While there are many of the exact same foodsin America as there are in Germany, there are also many food that have changed over the years that were roginially German dishes. (whatsforlunchhoney.net)
