Business Travel Reimagined: Work, Wellness, And The Rise Of BLeisure Travel( Business & Leisure)

By Maureen Okore
January’ s Return to Work and a New Kind of Business Trip
As January unfolds, professionals are dusting off their suitcases, but this year, business travel feels different. Instead of rigid itineraries and back-to-back meetings, many are embracing“ bleisure”; blending business with restorative downtime.
According to recent reports, 89 % of business travellers plan to add personal time to their work trips in 2025, and more than half have already done so. It’ s part of a wider shift: today’ s professionals understand that a rested, balanced mind is a sharper one. A 2024 Forbes travel trends survey further supports this, noting that 55 % of business travellers seek to extend work trips specifically to improve their work-life balance.
There’ s fresh optimism in the air as teams reconnect after the holidays, but also a new kind of mindfulness. The question isn’ t just“ How fast can I get there and back?”, it’ s“ How can I make this trip count for me, too?”
That might mean choosing a hotel with a great gym or adding a weekend at the coast. The bottom line is clear: business travel is no longer just transactional. It’ s personal. And that shift is reshaping what hotels, cities, and companies must offer in return.
Wellness and Work-Life Balance Take Center Stage
The post-pandemic era reminded the world that physical and mental well-being cannot be sidelined, especially on the road. According to a 2023 Amex GBT report, business travellers increasingly prioritize properties that support mental clarity and physical recovery.
In response, corporate travel policies are evolving. More companies are encouraging employees to extend their trips by a day or two for mental and physical recovery, recognizing that this buffer can boost retention, engagement, and overall performance.
Seasoned hoteliers have long known that a guest who feels cared for will come back repeatedly. In recent times that care goes beyond a friendly smile at the reception. It means ensuring the Wi-Fi is strong and the yoga mat is available on request; the breakfast buffet has fresh green juices alongside the coffee; and maybe the conference schedule has a built-in afternoon for exploring the local culture.
Refurbishment as a Signal of Readiness
Nowhere is this insight more visible than at the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel. Fresh off the successful completion of a phased refurbishment of its North Wing, the hotel has repositioned itself to meet the evolving needs of the modern business traveller. The newly upgraded rooms now feature calming, contemporary interiors, intuitive lighting and climate controls, smart TVs, and sleek en-suite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers. Thoughtful details that say to every guest:“ we have anticipated your needs.” According to the Acting General Manager Charles Mbuya,“ this milestone reflects Serena’ s ongoing commitment to exceptional guest experience.’’
Importantly, this is just Phase One. The next phase, which includes the enhancement of the South Wing and the introduction of a brand-new Maisha Spa, is already underway, carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption to current guests.
The goal is clear: to create a premium city base that supports high performance, thoughtful living, and seamless hospitality. As a hospitality marketing director, I see this as the blueprint for success: invest in quality, invest in wellness, and the guests will invest in you- with their bookings and their loyalty.
Dar es Salaam: A Business City That Gives Back
Tanzania’ s commercial capital continues to evolve. Long regarded as a gateway city, Dar es Salaam is emerging as a central node for conferences, investment, and executive mobility. A recent business forum hosted at the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel spotlighted the city’ s ambition to become a premier MICE destination. With a growing convention infrastructure and streamlined trade policies, the city is making a strong case for global attention.
But Dar offers more than functional value, it offers cultural richness. With its Swahili-Arabic heritage, Indian Ocean coastline, and vibrant culinary scene, the city invites travellers to shift gears after hours. It’ s a place where boardroom intensity can effortlessly give way to sunset walks, coastal golf, or seafood dinners under the stars. That soft landing, the ability to unwind without going far reinforces the value of staying just a little longer.
From the City to the Beach: Experience Zanzibar
Just a short hop from Dar es Salaam, the Zanzibar Serena Hotel offers business travellers a blissful Indian Ocean escape- the quintessential“ bleisure” add-on.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of doing business in Dar es Salaam is how easy
