THE MYSTERIOUS STATUE I FOUND Maria Scerri It was a sunny Sunday and my family and I decided to go and visit the Ġgantija temples in Xagħra. My twin sister and I were still very young and we weren’t interested in History. So we decided to go to and play in a field nearby. Mum didn’t notice that we had gone to play. We started digging seperately but after a while I heard my sister cry. She told me that her hand hit something hard and that she was hurt. But we couldn’t go back to our parents because they would keep us next to them. My sister was ok but I wanted to know what was in the soil. I dug until I got surprised because I found a small figurine of the goddess of fertility! My sister and I ran to my mother and showed her the statue, she was so surprised! We took the statue to the Ġgantija temples manager. He couldn’t beleive his eyes! He told us that a thief had stolen it in 2000 and they couldn’t find it! The figurine was over 5000 years old! It was the goddess of fertility of the people who lived in Gozo 5000 years ago. Our prize was to go to a large toy store in Malta and choose five things that we wanted! My sisters and I were truly the heroes! 20
