door? And what on earth had happened to the door itself? It was made of wood and it seemed rather bigger that when we first came in! Even stranger, it was locked! What was happening? We turned back to try to get some help from the officer at the auditorium. Suddenly a woman approached us looking very strange. She was wearing old fashioned clothes, carrying a cane basket. She looked exactly like the ladies we had just seen on the film! She stared at us and we stared at her too. Finally she took off in a hurry turning to look at us every now and then till she finally disappeared around the corner. Very strange! The only valid reason we could come up with was that she worked as a tourist attraction guide in some souvenir shop.
As we continued to walk along the narrow roads of the Citadel, all confused with what we saw, suddenly hell broke loose! We heard a strong male yell calling out to watch for the Ottomans! From all the corners, lots of people came out running and rushing. Women were heard crying out for their children. Men came out of their homes, heading to the main square in front of the cathedral. We were all in shock, not knowing what to do and what to say! Soon a legion of soldiers came running down the road. One of them shouted at us to find shelter because the Ottomans were near! What Ottomans? What was happening? Where were we? I dared to mumble to my friends if this was really happening. Could we really be back in time? How could this have happened? We panicked and ran along the narrow road. We saw an old man by a door, and asked him what was hapenning. He told us that the Ottomans were attacking again, which meant that a siege was actually about to start.
We ran along a road and found a safe spot were we could see the Ottomans approaching. We saw the soldiers firing arrows at them. We didn’ t dare to look again. After some time, we decided that we had to find a way out but the Ottomans surrounded all of the citadel. If we somehow got out, we would be doomed!
As we were searching for a safe spot, we found ourselves in front of the auditorium where this all started, but this time it was just a small room. We went in there and crouched in a corner.
Some time later, the door opened. We were going to start to scream, when we noticed that it was the officer who we had first met before the film had started, and we calmed down. He told us that the film was over, and so we peeked out of a window. The tourists were back and the doors were back to normal.
We thanked him, and ran out. What an experience! Whatever happened, we will never know, but surely it was quite exciting and also frightening! Now we all knew how the citizens of the island lived their days during such sieges!
