Folsom ’ s father passed away in 1992 at age 75 but her mother lived to be 104 .
“ Momma mowed her yard ( riding mower ) until she was 95 years old . I finally got her to stop driving at age 97 when her car battery died ,” said Folsom . “ I just kept forgetting to get it fixed . She lived independently at home until she was 101 and then moved to Morningside Assisted Living .” Folsom recalled how her mother loved everyone there and always talked about how sweet , kind and helpful everyone was . Plus , she said her precious momma couldn ’ t ever stop talking about how delicious the food was at Morningside .
“ She just passed away in February at the age of 104 ,” she said . “ When people ask me about her secret to a long life , I think it was probably her positive attitude . No matter the circumstances she was always thankful , loved life and chose happiness .”
When reflecting back on her parents , it led Folsom to another strong value her parents instilled in her : a love for knowledge .
So , it is no surprise to most that Folsom strived to reach many educational goals after graduating from Cullman High School in 1964 .
After high school , she attended Auburn University where she graduated with a bachelors ’ degree in Secondary Education with a history major . But her drive to succeed didn ’ t stop there .
She obtained her Master ’ s Degree in 1977 from UAB in Elementary Education . In 1996 , she completed her Doctorate degree in higher education administration from the University of Alabama .
“ Vicki Hawsey Karolewics , the President of Wallace , said she considers Dr . Folsom the matriarch of Wallace State . ‘ She was and is widely respected and admired for her leadership style and accomplishments . She is the epitome of Southern grace and charm , with never a ruffled feather .’” Jenny Folsom and Wally , Wallace State Community College mascot .
