New England is often thought of as a fall foliage destination , but not all of us are up for traveling that far . Another popular destination is Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia . Fortunately , we can enjoy scenic drives without ever leaving Alabama .
There are three scenic byways in North Alabama that offer a peaceful drive full of fall foliage . Over in northeast
Alabama is the Appalachian Highland Science Byway that travels from Heflin to Ft . Payne and Lookout Mountain Parkway traveling from Gadsden to Mentone . If you ’ re on the northwest side of Alabama you can get on the Natchez Trace Parkway , which cuts through Alabama as it runs from Franklin , TN to Natchez , MS . For the best look at the fall foliage across north Alabama , plan your drive for mid-October to early November .
