Members of New Vision always start their meetings out with the Pledge of Allegiance ; and did the same thing at their 20th anniversary celebration on October 21 , 2021 .
The motto is “ We live by faith , not by sight ” ( II Corinthians 5:7 ). “ Though our sight may be limited , our sights can be unlimited .” The organization offers OASIS , or safe-haven , to those who have impaired vision by providing emotional , physical and spiritual support through rehabilitation and support group services .
“ It is just a great group to be involved in ,” said Estes . “ We have decreased in numbers some over the years , but hopefully the numbers will begin to see an increase in the future .”
Being diagnosed with an eye condition that will gradually degrade vision can bring on a multitude of feelings ranging from shock and denial to depression , sadness and hopelessness , according to Linda Bailey , a long time member .
At times visual impairment may leave some feeling isolated and alone ; but asking for and seeking out a support system is not a sign of weakness or a burden to those around us .
“ Without a support system surrounding us in this trying time our level of stress can increase which can cause additional health or vision problems ,” said Bailey . “ And I have found that this support group has helped me tremendously the last two decades .”
The main objectives of the group , according to Bailey and other long-time members , is to offer encouragement and information which includes but isn ’ t limited to technology and presentations by eye care professionals and many others .
“ We would really love to see our group grow in numbers ,” said Bailey . “ Encourage anyone who deals with vision problems to join us ; we would love to have them .”
The group meets every third Thursday of the month at Hill Top Community Center at 1545 Vine Circle SW , Cullman .
Linda Estes and Tammy Chandler Williams , a representative from the Cullman Housing Authority , and many other New Vision support group members listened to several speakers at their 20th anniversary celebration in October .
