“ I guess you could say I have lived a pretty interesting life . We ’ ve had more adventure than dull moments that is for sure .”
Her first job was at the first psychiatric hospital in the state of Alabama , her first husband was killed in World War II , then she married her childhood crush / friend , gave birth to triplets ( who passed away , but probably would have lived today due to the advances in medicine and technology ) and moved all around the U . S . before moving back to her hometown of Logan to raise a family .
S . D . was born to Charley Mitchell Kilgo and Rhoena Addeline Kilgo in Logan , the seventh of 11 children . She has one living sister , Odeen Kilgo Wren .
“ I guess you could say I have lived a pretty interesting life ,” said S . D . with a grin . “ We ’ ve had more adventure than dull moments that is for sure .”
Her son , Darrell Brock , who is a retired principal and educator in the West Point area of Cullman County , has even recorded the history of his mother ’ s ancestors — turning it into historical fiction ; publishing several books .
“ Like Betty White , she has seen so many changes over the years and lived a life worth sharing ,” said Brock as he visited with me and S . D . in her home .
Laughing , S . D . interjected and said she didn ’ t realize she shared the same birthday with the famous Betty White or that they both had lived during the same century .
“ Now , that is pretty cool ,” said S . D . “ But then again , I guess we are both pretty cool ladies .”
It ’ s also cool that Brock remains very active , taking care of herself , attending the Crane Hill Senior Center on a daily basis , and working around her house when needed .
She loves spending time with her family whenever possible and said that even though she can ’ t quilt and sew like she once did , she still has a passion for giving to others .
Jackie Parker , who had worked as the manager at Crane Hill Senior Center , said she has always admired S . D ’ s get-up-and-go .
“ You should see her play cards ,” said Parker . “ She sure is feisty and full of life . “
S . D . admitted she could get a little competitive during card games .
“ Really , truly , I just love to have fun with friends and family ,” said S . D .
