this piece of artwork. Harbison showed off a poem
that she had written for her grandson called ‘Goin
Fishin’.
As she read through all of these poems, with so
much enthusiasm and skill, it was evident the love
Harbison had for teaching others to read and write
still lied deep inside her—giving the impression that
she was also an inspiration to so many in the Cullman
County she taught.
And according to Cullman County Commission-
er Garry Marchman that impression is completely
accurate.
“She was a wonderful teacher; full of love but she
also knew how to keep a disciplined classroom,” he
said.
Marchman shared that he realized a couple years
ago, after not seeing her for many years, that they
attended the same church, Temple Baptist Church.
“When I saw [Alice] Harbison, I knew exactly who
she was,” he said. “She was the same as I remembered
her and I was just glad she remembered me.”
Harbison didn’t just make this impression on
Alice Harbison pictured during her time at Jones Chapel.
