Hope through the 9th grade and then spent the
last three years at Cullman, where he graduated
in 1946.
During his high school years, Calvert was
an outstanding athlete, especially in baseball.
Holding up a special plaque, he showed off that
he was selected to be a part of the Cullman
County Hall of Fame many years later—in
2004.
“I’ve always loved being a part of athletics and
to me receiving this honor was beyond words,”
he said. “It really made me proud.”

He was at Fort McClellan and then he went to
Spokane Washington, where he was stationed

With tears in his eyes, he remembered how he
met his wife whom he was married to for more
than 55 years. “I will never forget that beautiful
nurse I met while I was working in her home

His late wife, Mildred, graduated from Troy
High School and continued her education at
The Holy Name of Jesus Nursing School. She
spent 45 years in the nursing field, touching so
many lives, her husband commented.
“To me, she was a beloved wife, mother, sister,
nurse and grandmother, and was loved by all
for her gentle spirit.”
