Mildred and James Calvert, who were married for more than 50 years. three brothers and one sister. He went to Good Hope through the 9th grade and then spent the last three years at Cullman, where he graduated in 1946. During his high school years, Calvert was an outstanding athlete, especially in baseball. Holding up a special plaque, he showed off that he was selected to be a part of the Cullman County Hall of Fame many years later—in 2004. “I’ve always loved being a part of athletics and to me receiving this honor was beyond words,” he said. “It really made me proud.” Not as proud as serving his country, though. Calvert joined the service after high school in March of 1946, during the time of World War II. 28 | SPRING 2020 He was at Fort McClellan and then he went to Spokane Washington, where he was stationed for several years. With tears in his eyes, he remembered how he met his wife whom he was married to for more than 55 years. “I will never forget that beautiful nurse I met while I was working in her home town,” Calvert said. His late wife, Mildred, graduated from Troy High School and continued her education at The Holy Name of Jesus Nursing School. She spent 45 years in the nursing field, touching so many lives, her husband commented. “To me, she was a beloved wife, mother, sister, nurse and grandmother, and was loved by all for her gentle spirit.” CULLMAN COUNTY SENIOR MAGAZINE
