This led to the fight of the century. Wil-
liam was a six-foot-five-inch, 275-pound,
full-blooded Cherokee, but Jukes gave as
good as he got. It only ended when Wil-
liam bit off his nose. For fear Jukes and his
family would retaliate, William immediately
moved his family to a new home 30 miles
southeast of Marthasville (modern day
Atlanta).
Nancy’s adventures weren’t over. When
the War Between the States broke out, her
father was quick to sign up. He craved
adventure and had already fought for the
government twice against the Seminoles in
south Florida. Nancy, now in her mid-thir-
ties, had finally found love and was engaged.
But her fiancé was drafted and he and Nan-
cy’s father both found themselves in Atlanta

Knowing him to be guilty, William called
him out, and, in front of the community,
accused him of murder. And that was the
defining moment when William realized
how much his world had changed. No one
backed him up. It wasn’t that they didn’t
believe him or thought that Jukes was not
capable of such a heinous act; it just wasn’t
an Indian’s place to accuse a white man.
