Exploring Cullman County through their Parks By Kelly Wheeler Sometimes, a picnic in the park is all it takes to relax for Dorea B. Speegle, of Cullman. During the Quarantine and while the Senior Centers were closed, she and several other seniors would grab lunch and take it down to the park. “I think we have some beautiful parks around here,” she said. “I love going over there and spending time.” While she would venture off to Sportsman Lake Park, many others would visit other parks scattered throughout the county. According to Cullman County Parks and Rec director’s website, Doug Davenport, the vision for the parks is to create an atmosphere at all of the beautiful parks in Cullman County that will allow you and your family to enjoy the day, or several days, in peaceful, pleasurable, relaxing fun. The mission, according to Davenport is to create places of enjoyment that are family oriented, beautiful, and that will service the people of Cullman County, as well as visitors, for years to come. “Cullman County is a county that is moving forward,” said Davenport. “That is why we are growing so steadily in the state of Alabama. Our growth and development as a community will always be a reflection that brought us to where we are.” “We value your family and believe that wonderful places to relax and get away from the stress of everyday life is vital to the success of Cullman County,” he said. 32 CULLMAN COUNTY SENIOR MAGAZINE
