robin wildeIn amongst all the other news that ' s dominated the headlines , Mario ' s first outing on smartphones has come late and been controversial . Given the behatted plumber has operated as Nintendo ' s meal ticket for a number of years , there was some consternation when his traditional exclusivity was broken to bring Super Mario Run to iOS this month ( it arrives on Android early next year ).
However , this $ 10 mobile game ( often described as an endless runner but a touch more involved than that description implies ) has clearly not hit any problems in sales .
In its first four days
|
on Apple ' s App Store , Super Mario Run hit 40 million downloads , shattering first week records - including those of another Nintendo property , Pokémon Go , which took four times as long to reach the same figure .
Despite the strong download figures , Nintendo ' s stock price dropped 14 per cent in the days following the release , knocking nearly £ 4bn off its value .
Despite high download numbers , only around four per cent of downloaders went on to pay the $ 10 price tag for the full game , of which only 70 per cent goes to Nintendo .
This , and fears that the gaming giant may
|
be taking big risks in entering the mobile market , may be behind the stock drop - though it is worth noting that Nintendo ' s stock is apt to drop whenever the company does anything .
Nintendo ' s share price more than doubled after the release of Pokémon Go in June , but the rapid growth soon settled down .
In an interview with
Japanese magazine Kyoto NP , Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed Nintendo would release more mobile games during 2017 . Future releases have been confirmed as part of the Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem franchises .
