Robert Cannon , MD

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Robert Cannon , MD , was named surgical director of the Liver Transplant Program within the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute . A specialist in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery , Dr . Cannon ’ s clinical interests also include surgical management of portal hypertension , surgical management of polycystic liver disease , and comprehensive management of the full spectrum of benign and malignant hepatobiliary tumors , including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma .

Douglas Anderson , MD , MS

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Douglas Anderson , MD , MS , was named surgical director for the Pancreas Transplantation Program within the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute . He also serves as program director of UAB ’ s Abdominal Transplant Fellowship program . Dr . Anderson spent two years in the Emory Transplant Center laboratory , researching co-stimulation , blockade-based immunosuppression strategies in a pre-clinical model of kidney transplantation .

Paige Porrett , MD , PhD

Paige Porrett , MD , PhD , joined UAB Medicine in 2020 as surgical director of the Uterus Transplant Program , director of Clinical and Translational Research for the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute , and associate professor of surgery in the UAB Division of Transplantation . Dr . Porrett established the first uterus transplant program at UAB , which provides women with uterine factor infertility an innovative option for childbearing using deceased-donor organs . It is the first uterus transplant program in the southeast and only the fourth such program in the nation .

Shikha Mehta , MD , FAST

Shikha Mehta , MD , FAST , associate professor of Medicine in the UAB Division of Nephrology , was named medical director for the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program within the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute . She has been a member of the UAB School of Medicine faculty since 2011 . Her clinical and research interests include expanding access to lifesaving transplantation by increasing utilization of organs from HIV-positive and hepatitis C-positive donors , and she is medical director of the HIV and hepatitis C transplant programs at UAB .

Charles A . “ Trey ” Leath III , MD

Charles A . “ Trey ” Leath III , MD , director of the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology , was named medical director of the Uterus Transplant Program within the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute . He has been on faculty as a professor of medicine within the UAB School of Medicine since 2013 . UAB ’ s Uterus Transplant Program includes screening and embryo creation ahead of transplant , followed by embryo transfer and Cesarean delivery post-transplant . The program is working closely with the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology on this initiative .
