DR. ANDREW DUTRA spoke at the 9th International Conference on Sport and Society
that was held at Florida International University on July 19 and 20. Dr. Dutra’s talk was
entitled, “Fitness Attributes and Academic Achievement of Non-Science Majors at an
Independent University in Central Florida.” In addition to his presentation, Dr. Dutra was
honored with the Emerging Scholar Award. He is an instructor in the Biology department
at EFSC.
JOHN HILSTON was chosen as a recipient of the 41st Annual Leavey Awards for
Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Professor Hilston was one of eight recipients
of the honor, which includes a $7,500 cash award. This distinction recognizes educators
for innovation and effective techniques in teaching entrepreneurship and free enterprise
education. The EFSC faculty member was chosen based upon four initiatives he developed
to use American History and hands-on learning to enhance the teaching of Economics.
John teaches Economics and American History on the Palm Bay Campus.
DR. LAURA EARLE finished another Master’s degree this spring. Her newest degree is a
Master’s in Pharmacy, Clinical Toxicology from the University of Florida.
DR. JANET E. RUBIN presented a workshop at the Juried Arts in Society International
Conference in Vancouver, Canada. The session, “Enacting History: Learning About the
Holocaust Through Theatrical Activities”, employed scenes and activities that provided
a direct and meaningful approach to learning about the Holocaust through scripted
material. In addition, she and colleague Mira Hirsch presented the session “Enacting
History: Teaching About the Holocaust Through Theatre” at the American Alliance for
Theatre and Education National Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
DR. JOSIE ORAMAS, who recently joined the Cocoa Campus as a Psychology instructor,
was a guest at Buena Nueva Radio (Spanish) for Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. In an
interview, Dr. Oramas spoke about depression and divorce among Hispanics. In addition,
Dr. Oramas co-authored the article, “Chinese Students in U.S. Universities: A Qualitative
Study of Cross-Cultural Learning Experiences, Transition and Adaptation”, which
appeared in the “Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research”. A second
publication by Dr. Oramas, “Counseling Ethics: Overview of Challenges, Responsibilities
and Recommended Practices” appeared in the “Journal of Multidisciplinary Research”.
DR. KATINA GOTHARD, Professor of Mathematics on the Palm Bay Campus, and her
colleague Megan Mocko of the University of Florida have been awarded a $3,000 grant
by the AMATYC to support their research study, “How POGIL-Inspired Activities Affect
Instruction and Performance in an Introductory Statistics Course”. The purpose of the
study is to determine the effectiveness of four POGIL-style classroom activities they
designed to meet the recommendations of the 2016 GAISE report for undergraduate
introductory statistics courses. The activities focus on terms and concepts identified in
recent statistics education research as difficult for students. Topics addressed include
randomness, center, shape, variability, sampling distributions, standard error, margin of
error and confidence intervals. They are currently implementing the activities at their
home institutions and hope to secure volunteers to implement the activities across 10 of
the state colleges in Florida during Fall 2018.
A special THANK YOU to Janet Rubin from the CTE. Janet brought the idea of this
