Adding a Webcam Video to a Presentation

By Dr . William Stewart
A few years ago , I began making little videos for my students , in which I would record myself drawing and writing on a piece of paper using a camera overhead and recording my voice in audio . This seemed to work okay , but students started to complain that they couldn ’ t see my face , which made these videos less personal and engaging . The same thing happened when I recorded a PowerPoint or keynote presentation ; the students could see the slides and hear my voice , but they wanted to see my face , too ! So , I started recording myself with a webcam during these little lectures and combining the two recordings ( presentation and webcam ) in the final video . It ’ s just a little extra work , and the feedback from students has been positive !
I ’ ll explain the basic process for a Mac , since that ’ s what I use . If you are recording a PowerPoint presentation , first open the QuickTime Player app and start a new movie recording ( File - > New Movie Recording ). This brings up a window with a live feed of your webcam . Click record . Next , open up PowerPoint and start another recording of your presentation . Make sure to include the microphone in your recording . Once you are finished with your lecture , you will have two video recordings , one from the webcam and one of your presentation . Next , use iMovie to combine the two videos . Open the iMovie app and start a new project . Import the recording of your presentation first . Second , import the recording of your webcam , and place it on top of the first recording . Select the picture-in-picture option , and you can place the recording of the webcam in the corner of your presentation ! Syncing the two videos is made easy by matching up the sound waves . I ’ ll post a video tutorial in myCTE that shows how all this is accomplished .
