College-wide
Minority Male
Initiative
The Minority Male Initiative (MMI) is
a college-wide endeavor focused on
improving the retention and completion
rates for men of color. This initiative was
birthed with the recognition that minority
males’ share of degree completions is
disproportionately lower than those of
female students and white male students.
Not only is this a trend for our College, but
it is a nation-wide trend that many colleges
throughout the U.S. are making efforts to
address. While the overall population of
minority male students at the College may
be lower than other student population
groups, low program completion rates of
minority male students have a significant
impact on the College’s performance-
based funding stats.

professional development for faculty and

overall effectiveness among male students
of color.
MMI is an administration / faculty joint
effort to utilize best practices and ideas
to increase the overall rate of success for
men of color. The MMI leadership team
consists of six faculty champions and three
lead administrators working to identify
every resource available to reverse this
disturbing trend among minority male
students. The initial strategy of MMI is
for the faculty leads on each campus
to develop and work with a cohort of
minority male students, wherein academic
and professional support, mentoring,
