Rubin at [email protected] Faculty in the News DOUGLAS AND HOLLY WENDEL welcomed baby #2, Hudson Jane Wendel, to the world on Friday, September 28 at 12:05 a.m. She was 8 lbs. and 21 inches. Brother Atlee is in love with his sister! DR. ERVIN C. JACKSON, who recently joined the Palm Bay Campus full-time as a speech instructor, facilitated a team building workshop for the financial services department of the city of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Dr. Jackson has also been chosen as the new Palm Bay Ally for the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) and is one of the Palm Bay faculty leads for the Minority Male Initiative (MMI). Dr. Jackson, working along with Susan Houts, has also written a new course entitled SPC 2700 Intercultural Communication. Upon confirmation of its approval, he hopes to begin teaching the course on the Palm Bay Campus in Fall 2019. AARON HOUTS has been awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the FFLA (Florida Foreign Language Association) and the FWLCU (Florida World Languages in Colleges and Universities) Post-Secondary League based on his work at EFSC as well as his activities during his tenure as the FWLCU’s president since October 2016. Some accomplishments include hosting two FWLCU conferences on the Palm Bay Campus attended by World Language Educators from all around Florida, as well as moderating the 2017 FFLA State-Wide Conference. With EFSC Spanish faculty members Pilar Florenz and Dr. Nichole Gomez, Aaron presented at the 2018 FFLA State-Wide Conference in October. The presentation, entitled “Get Ready, Get Set… Go!: How to Promote and Assess Oral Production,” will discuss ideas on how to implement interactive and communicative activities in the foreign language classroom. TED HARTSELLE was featured in the Kiwanis Magazine. The article, “He Launches Rockets,” notes that the Space Shuttle program sent orbiters into space 135 times, and Hartselle was there – working for every single one. DEANA LOONEY received her Doctor of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University at the end of August. Deana is a member of the EFSC Business faculty. DR. JULIA DERRICK passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2018. She was a member of the Business Department and a former treasurer of the UFF. She made many contributions to the Cocoa Campus and to the entire College. Those wishing to donate to charities in her name might consider Heifer International or the Central Brevard Humane Society. SUSAN HOUTS was awarded the 2018-19 Florida Public Relations Associate of the Space Coast Annual Membership Scholarship. As stated by Samantha Senger, the current FPRA of the Space Coast President, “We are so excited to have Susan join the association. I think she will really benefit from the membership, and we will definitely benefit from her participation. We are [also] excited at the enthusiasm to get students involved in the chapter.” For more than 25 years, the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association has been promoting and developing the public relations profession. Its membership is one of the most diverse in the state, with multiple levels of experience and differing areas of expertise. CORDIA SIMPSON received a Post Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education from Walden University.
