Immersion brings together 100 librarians each summer to learn about teaching information literacy in higher education settings. Six librarian-facilitators use one particular lens for each gathering. This year’s focus was on Social Justice, Equity and Inclusion. Sarah gathered valuable information about how librarians are adding these topics to their information-literacy classes through the use of specific keywords in database demonstrations, through in-class learning activities and through campus-wide gatherings that bring together students, staff and faculty to encourage change at their institutions. She also made the acquaintance of 100 very interesting librarians from all over the United States and Canada, plus librarians each from Ireland, Lebanon and China. Breakout sessions included topics like “Intro to Critical Reflective Practice,” “Mapping Our Practices,” “Information Literacy,” “Leading,” “Unpacking Privilege,” “Designing for Equity,” “Project Management,” “Assessment,” “Persuading & Negotiating,” “Sustainable Practices” and “The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.” Sarah plans to create a research guide that will contain Immersion information and resources. She was able to attend Immersion thanks to EFSC PLAF funds and one of the Jim Morris Travel Stipends from NEFLIN.
