Albuquerque International Balloon
Fiesta
Every year in October, since 1972, hot-air balloon pilots and enthusiastic fans
of these giant floating masterpieces have gathered in Albuquerque, New
Mexico to enjoy the colorful show.
The event was originally started as the highlight of radio station 770 KOB's 50th
anniversary celebration, but became so popular that it turned into an annual
event. In fact, the Balloon Fiesta is now such a popular draw for the New
Mexico tourists industry as it is a major source of income for local businesses
and artisans. However, some consider it to be more of a nuisance than a benefit due to the impact on traffic
interferring with the morning commute to work, a lack of adequate parking, and the occassional landing of the
balloons on private property without prior permission.
Whether you love them or hate them, it cannot be denied that the skies overhead filled with so many colorful
and whimsical inflatable c reations is a wonderous sight to see.
