I spent about a week hurtling around Amboseli in a van with Walter my guide. He was in his mid-sixties and had been guiding for all of his adult life. I think for 90% of our time there he was on the brink of tears. I couldn't tell if he was distressed about the possibility of losing his job or if he was upset about seeing his beloved Amboseli and its occupants slowly suffering a hot, dusty death. Probably both. He said he had seen it like this once before and life came back to Amboseli eventually and he was hoping it would rise from the ashes again. 8
