Dreadout Platforms: Windows PC, Mac, Linux Dreadout is a combination third-person and first-person perspective horror game set in an abandoned town in Indonesia. You play the character of Linda who fends off or interacts with ghosts through use of a Smartphone and digital video camera. Linda has to contend with hostile ghosts and puzzle solving in order to survive her journey through the town. The Smartphone comes in handy for “shooting” ghosts with the camera, which defeats some of them, as well as allowing Linda to obtain items needed to complete puzzles. Some of the ghosts are relentless and very hard to vanquish, leaving one with the best option of just running away. If she dies during game play she will find herself waking up in a room that is just barely illuminated by candles. To come back to life she must run towards the bright light in the distance. Although not as wet-your-pants scary as Outlast, this game still has some pretty nerve-wracking, chew-your-fingernails moments that will leave you feeling edgy. It puts me very much in mind of those ultra creepy movies, The Grudge and The Ring, neither of which I will ever watch again due to their ability to make me fear the dark and refuse to sleep with the lights out. Come to think of it, Dreadout had the same effect! Fear Factor – 9+ Graphics – 9 Playability – 8 Price - $14.99 Dreadout is developed and published by Digital Happiness, a crew of wic ked programming geniuses based in Bandung, Indonesia who obviously enjoy scaring the crap out of unwary gamers. This Indie game development company is well worth watching for future releases of other games. http://dreadout.com/ . Available as digital download through Steam. Paranormal Platforms: Windows PC, Mac Paranormal is a first-person camera perspective horror game similar to the movies The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Due to the randomization programed into the game no haunting is ever the same, making for a new experience with each game play. Nowhere near as scary as Outlast or Dreadout, this game is still well worth it, especially for the more faint-of-heart who prefer to have a few spine-tingling moments instead of an all out fright fest. The game is still in beta mode but overall a great game. Fear Factor – 8 Graphics – 7 Playability – 8 Price - FREE Paranormal is being developed by Indie programmer Matt Cohen. It is available for free as a download in both Windows and Mac at http://www.indiedb.com/games/paranormal/downloads 94
