Necrology

Dale Smith February 5 th , 2016 ~ Age 57

O ne of the most talented and popular golfers in Eastern Connecticut , Dale was an eighttime club champion at the Quinnatisset Country Club in Thompson , and a past winner of the Norwich Invitational . He was also the former coach of the Tourtellotte Memorial

High School golf team and led Tourtellotte to a state high school golf championship .
Dale shared his passion for golf with many people and shared his knowledge of the game with many young people , most notably his son , Matt who grew to become one of Connecticut ’ s best players and who won the 2012 Connecticut Amateur with Dale serving as his caddy .
Recalls Connecticut National head professional , Jim West , “ I have known Dale since I was 14 years old . He was a great competitor on the golf course , but more than anything he was 110 percent a family man .”

Nick Pahoulis April 1 st , 2016 ~ Age 71

N ick was the driving force behind the Tallwood Men ’ s Club , and a gregarious and devoted

member of the CSGA Executive Committee for many years . He was a passionate supporter of junior golf who chaired the CSGA Junior Golf Committee and took a personal interest in the development of dozens of junior golfers throughout Connecticut . He took great pride in the success of Connecticut ’ s junior team that competed each year in the New England Junior Invitational and which thrived under his leadership .
Nick received the CSGA Distinguished Service Award in 2013 in appreciation for his many years of outstanding service .
“ Nick was a great man , and he was very special to my son ,” recalls Rob Josephson . “ He took a real interest him , and his inclusion of Kevin on the 2007 CSGA Junior Team helped propel Kevin to wonderful achievements in golf . I will never forget Nick ' s speech at the CSGA annual meeting at Lake of Isles in December of 2013 . He spoke from the heart , and there wasn ' t a dry eye in the room .”

Bill Lanzoni May 30 th , 2016 ~ Age 93

T he CSGA Volunteer of the Year in 2004 , Bill was an eleven-time Senior Club Champion at The

Farms Country Club who “ shot his age ” in twenty consecutive years from the age of 71 through the age of 90 .
“ Dad ' s passion was everything golf ,” said his son Dennis .“ As a young man , he caddied in Hamden during the Depression in order to make a little money to help his family . It was during these years that he came to love the game . Dad loved golf courses like people love the ocean or the mountains . When he was on a golf course , pulling his golf cart behind him which he did until age 88 , and smoking his pipe , all was right with the world .”
Bill ’ s generous spirit manifested itself in many areas , most noticeably in his commitment to donating blood , a practice that he began during World War II and continued until his death . Bill gave over 100 gallons of his blood so that others could live . At the time of his death he had given more blood than any other person in the State of Connecticut .

George McDermott August 30 th , 2016 ~ Age 90

T he patriarch of one of Connecticut ’ s most successful and prominent golf families , George ’ s

retirement from Pratt and Whitney in 1981 gave him the opportunity to work with his family at the family owned and operated golf course , Twin Hills Country Club in Coventry . The course had been under construction for 16 years while family and friends worked to develop it digging rocks , planting grass , and installing irrigation . In addition to owning Twin Hills , he had the opportunity to purchase Tallwood Country Club in Hebron with his family . Both courses have been owned and operated by George and his family since 1995 .
“ He worked a second shift at Pratt and built Twin Hills from an old milk farm , and we made a living out of it ,” said his daughter Dawn . “ He was just a great person , and we miss him terribly .”
