15TH Al Acker One Day Championship
October 11 ~ Shennecossett Golf Course
F
SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST
or the 15th consecutive year, the CSGA ended its championship
season with the One Day Championship. Renamed the “Al Acker
One Day Championship” in memory of the 'King of One Day’s',
the 15th playing was nothing short of exciting.
Contested on the 6,562 yard, par 71 Donald Ross designed
Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Connecticut, the Al Acker One Day
Championship serves as the final event on the One Day series schedule.
Players can earn their invitation to compete in the final event by recording
a top-five finish in any of the CSGA’s thirteen One Day tournaments
throughout the season.
In the Tettelbach (under fifty-five) Division, Chris Flowers of H.
Smith Richardson Golf Course edged Brent Dietz of Cedar Knob Golf
Course on the first playoff hole to capture the victory. Both Flowers and
Dietz turned in a score of two under-par 69 to send the event to a playoff.
Flowers edged Dietz with a par on the first playoff hole to capture his first
victory of the season. Flowers recorded two eagles to go along with a birdie
and three bogies during his round.
"I came into today's round with a 'finish strong' attitude," said
Flowers, who will begin working as a PGA apprentice this winter. "I got off
to a bad start, but when I made eagle on my 6th hole, I picked up momentum
and played solid golf the rest of the way. Fortunately, I made the par putt on
the first playoff hole to win."
In the Siderowf (fifty-five and older) Division, Edward Cashman
of the Middlesex Eclub captured his fourth win of the season, with a three
under-par score of 68. Cashman used three birdies and an eagle to offset just
two bogies during his round. Cashman bogied his second hole of the day on
the par-4 11th, but was able to quickly bounce back, recording a birdie and
eagle on the back 9. Cashman edged out Bruce Kraczkowsky of Blue Fox
Run Golf Course by two strokes for the title.
In the Tettelbach Net Division, Tom Dowd of Topstone Golf
Course captured the title with a round of six under-par 65. With the win,
Dowd earned his second title of the 2016 One Day season. Tom Hurd of
Great Neck Country Club captured his third win of the 2016 One Day
season by also turning in a six under-par 65 in the Siderowf Net Division.
The Connecticut State Golf Association would like to thank all
of the golf clubs who hosted tournaments this season, and the golfers and
volunteers who helped make 2016 another successful year for participation in
the CSGA One Day Tournament Series.
“
Finishing Runner-Up at the public
links earlier this year was my
best ever finish in a csga event,
so it's pretty exciting and a
confidence booster to finally pull off
a csga victory.
