CSGA Scholarship Fund In Honor of Widdy Neale I N ITS SIXTY-FIRST YEAR, the CSGA Scholarship Fund in honor of Widdy Neale has reached a new milestone of achieving $100,000 in annual contributions. For the 2014-15 academic year, a total of fifty students are eligible recipients of Widdy Neale scholarships. They include sixteen college seniors, ten juniors, twelve sophomores, and twelve freshmen. The average grant is over $2,000 per year for four years with the largest awards of $3,500. The scholarships are given in honor of its long-time CSGA Executive Director William “Widdy” Neale and eligibilit y for a Widdy Neale Scholarship is based on the recommendations of CSGA member clubs of young men and women who have worked at their clubs for at least two years. The program recognizes graduating high school seniors who work at CSGA member golf clubs in positions serving the golf program and/or serving golfers and who are enrolling in four-year colleges and universities. Scholarships are awarded by a Selection Committee considering the academic performance, school and community service, leadership activities, and financial needs of the nominees. The Fund is supported primarily by a major financial commitment from the CSGA. Other significant contributors include the Bob Pryde Endowment administered by The Community Foundation for New Haven, the Connecticut State Seniors Golf Association, the Senior Golfers of Connecticut, and the New England Senior Golfers’ Association. Increasingly important are the contributions of individual golfers through the CSGA donors recognition program. Since 1954, the program has awarded over $2.84 million in scholarship aid to 529 graduating high school seniors. Unlike many other scholarship programs, the CSGA scholarships are four-year awards. “This year’s recipients are all outstanding young people with excellent academic records who have been leaders in their schools and who have completed extensive community service,” said Dick Zanini, CSGA Scholarship Fund Managing Director. “Their fields of interest for college study are diverse and include civil engineering, business, finance, accounting, broadcast journalism, medical-biological science, psychology, digital media and design, and business law.” Below: Scholarship Managing Director and CSGA Past President Dr. Richard Zanini has been instrumental in the growth of the scholarship fund.
