HEN IT COMES TO LISTING the top senior golfers in the
Northeast, it’s hard not to put Dave Szewczul of Tunxis Plantation
Country Club on the top of every list. Not only did he wrap up his
sixth consecutive Senior Player of the Year title in 2014, Szewczul also advanced
to the Round of 16 at this year’s U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
As a quarterfinalist in 2013, Szewczul was exempt from local
qualifying and was automatically in the field at this year’s championship
proper, played at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California on
September 13th - 18th. After advancing through stroke play qualifying with
a pair of 72’s, Szewczul entered the match play portion of the championship
as the #17 seed. He successfully defeated Don Marsh of Alpharetta, Georgia
in the opening round by a score of 5 and 4, and then knocked off fellow NewEnglander Don Reycroft of Norfolk, Massachusetts in 20 holes.
However, Szewczul fell to Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill, South
Carolina, who went on to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion,
Patrick Tallet of Vienna, Virginia. Nonetheless, it was another out 7F
