2014 NEW ENGLAND JUNIOR AMATEUR
Ledgemont Country Club Seekonk, R.I. August 18 - 20
F
OR THE second consecutive year
Connecticut’s seven player junior team
jumped out to a first round lead in the
New England Junior Championship, only to be
overtaken by eventual winner Massachusetts.
The 6,801 yard, par 71 Ledgemont Country
Club in Seekonk, Massachusetts hosted the
2014 Championship, an event which draws
the best young players from each of the six New
England states in a 54-hole team competition.
The team total is the sum of the best five of
seven scores for each round.
Players who have not yet reached
their 18th birthday are eligible to be selected
by their respective state golf association. The
CSGA invites the winner and runner-up in the
Connecticut Junior Amateur Championship
played at Watertown Golf Club, and five
additional players based upon their competitive
record in a wide range of state, regional and
national level tournaments.
From Left to Right: Chuck Claffey, Connor O’Brien, Andrew Sciarretta, Max Theodorakis, Evan Grenus,
Nathaniel Dong, Michael VanDerLaan, Jason Liu, Jim Homiski and Michael Moraghan
Every state junior champion
in New England competed in the 2014
Championship, including Evan Grenus of
Glastonbury and TPC River Highlands.
Grenus led Connecticut with rounds of 7174-70 215, good for a runner-up finish in
the overall individual standings. The recent
Glastonbury High School graduate, who began
his freshman year at Wofford College this fall,
concluded a stellar junior golf career in which
he won the Stan Trojanowski Northern Junior
and the Challenge Cup Tournament Players
Championship in 2013 before capturing the
2014 CSGA Junior Amateur Championship.
Grenus was a member of the both the
2012 and 2013 Connecticut teams in the New
England Junior. The 2012 team captured the
championship by 29 strokes, a record margin
of victory in the forty-seven year history of the
event. Connor O’Brien (Norwalk, Oak Hills
Park GC), who defeated Grenus in the finals of
the 2013 CSGA Junior, and Nathaniel Dong
(Glastonbury, Tallwood CC) were members of
both the 2013 and 2014 teams.
The 2014 Connecticut Junior Team
was a relatively young squad as only Grenus and
O’Brien will reach their 18th birthday prior to
next year’s Championship. In addition to Dong,
Max Theodorakis (Danbury, Ridgewood CC),
Andrew Sciarretta (Wilton, Brooklawn CC),
Jason Liu (Windsor, Wintonbury Hills GC),
and Michael VanDerLaan (Southbury, CC
of Waterbury) will all be eligible for selection
to next year’s team. The 2015 New England
Junior Championship will be hosted by Maine
at Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth.
