The CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association for Australasia) recently reported
statistics for 2018, based on Australians taking an ocean cruise.
The popularity of cruising continues to grow, and although that growth has
slowed somewhat over the past couple of years, there was still a total of 1.35
million Australians who took an ocean cruise in 2018.

Australia once again leads the established cruise markets in penetration rates,
with 5.8% of the population taking an ocean cruise, or the equivalent of almost
one in every 17 Australians. This compares to 4.0% in the USA, 3.0% in the UK and
2.8% in Germany.
In 2018, the majority of Australian cruisers continued to sail within Australia, New
Zealand and the South Pacific (76.6%). In terms of fly-cruise, Europe and the
Mediterranean were the most popular long-haul destinations for Australians,
accounting for 8.1% of cruises, with North America, the Caribbean, Alaska and
Hawaii accounting for 7.3% and Asia with 5.4%.

information on Global
Passenger Cruising
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has released the latest global cruise
passenger statistics. Playing a significant role in international tourism, cruising
continues at a paced growth around the world with an almost 7 percent increase
from 2017 to 2018, totalling 28.5 million passengers. Australia has continued its
long run of cruising growth with a total of 1.35 million Australians taking an ocean
cruise during 2018, a slight increase on the previous year’s record. However, growth
slowed to just 0.9 per cent year-on-year, according to the 2018 Ocean Source
Market report for Australia released by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA),
reflecting capacity constraints associated with a shortage of berthing infrastructure
in Sydney. Despite the lower growth, the result still showed a higher number of
Australians choosing a cruising holiday than ever before. Nearly one in every 17
Aussies, or 5.8 per cent of the population, took a cruise last year.
