Chasing God

by Rachel Pruett

Recently I’ve had a few of my friends come to me for advice on how to grow in their relationship with God, and where to start. These questions always make my heart happy. To hear that people are eager to grow closer in their walk with the Lord, is encouraging.

So, logically I tell them some of my favorite books in the Bible and encourage them to talk to God daily. But a lot of the time, people that want to grow closer to God end up going through the motions. Why? Because it is difficult! Everything in this world is telling them to do the opposite.

Instead of trying to check "time with God" off your list, CHASE AFTER HIM.

Think of it as running a race. God is in front; sin is behind. When you consider time with God something to be checked off your list, rather than treasuring time with Him, you stop running the race. But as you do this, sin is catching up with you and will overtake you if you don’t start running. Likewise, when you don’t view your time with God as the most valuable time of your day, you get tired and have to stop for a breath.

On the other hand, when you begin to spend time with the Lord and desire Him to the point of craving time with Him, you start running faster and closer to Him. But running harder and faster is more difficult and challenging. Are you going to let that scare you away?

Something that comes along with chasing God is difficulty. Because like the Bible says in Matthew 7, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” If we follow the wide (easy) gate, it leads to destruction. When we choose Him, we are choosing the narrow gate, and His Word tells us that it won’t be easy.

When you begin chasing God, it’s hard because people are looking to you for strength to run their race. It’s hard to realize that everything you do can have an impact. It’s hard when you mess up or feel lost. It is HARD.

But we can rejoice in this!

Because God tells us in 2 Corinthians that His power is made perfect in our weaknesses.

Even though it gets difficult to chase God, it is so worth it!
