Leaving the Island of Comfort
"I've been staring at the edge of the water, long before I can remember,
never really knowing why."
I grew up on the water. There's nothing like falling asleep in the summertime with waves lapping gently along the shore, just outside my bedroom window.
The water has a magnetic pull. Whether you're standing on the edge of the ocean, the edge of a lake, or the edge of a waterfall, something compells you to wonder what's on the other side. Something stirs within, beckoning you to go.
When I first heard the song,"How Far I'll Go" the lyrics resonated deeply within.
"I know everybody on this island seems to happy on this island, everything is by design. But the voice inside sings a different song..."
For as long as I can remember, I have not been okay with mediocre. I've always had a strong resistance in my heart toward anything that is labeled as "normal" or "status co." As everyone on the island of this world is mindlessly marching along, doing their daily jobs and content to be safe on the shore, the Holy Spirit is calling me to step out into the great unknown. He is calling me to set sail, riding my boat of faith, being propelled by the wind of His Spirit into deep, unchartered waters.
Sure, it's much safer to stay on the island. It's safer to cling to the things I know, to cling to the comfortable, and carry on with the crowds. But just like Jesus asked His disciples, He is asking once more, "Will you follow Me? Will you be brave, and believe that I have good things planned for you? Will you follow and trust your Adventure Guide? It is true that you don't know where you're going, but I do!"
"See the light as it shines on the sea, it’s blinding. And no one knows how deep it goes, and it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me."
The love of Christ is far more compelling than the ocean. It is deeper, wider, vaster, and more mysterious! God's love is SO uncomprehendable and multifaceted. It begs to be explored! Sadly, many Christians stay on the island of comfort and refuse to leave the shore, for fear of what might happen if they choose to let go and trust God with every part of their heart.
