Opening Doors with Internships

After suffering sports injuries several years ago , Crowley High School senior Gaby Ortiz shifted her aspirations from soccer to medicine .
With the help of a health sciences practicum course at the Bill R . Johnson Career and Technology Education ( CTE ) Center , she ’ s not only learning about the medical field but getting a real-world glimpse inside health care facilities , including Huguley Hospital .
“ God found his way of showing me this is your path ,” Ortiz said . “ Ultimately it led me to health care , so now I ’ m here trying to learn everything I can and be the best I can be .”
Ortiz is one of more than 150 students at the CTE Center who participate in internships at 10 different locations as part of their high school course work .
Jerico Thurman , CTE health sciences teacher , said she wants students to observe how various health care providers interact with each other and with the patients .
“ The internship at Huguley is vital because it immerses them in the culture , it immerses them into health care ,” Thurman , also a registered nurse , said . “ We want them to not just read about it or look at it on TV . We want them to actually put on the scrubs and go do something — even if it ’ s just observing .”
Ortiz said it ’ s exciting for her and her classmates to have the chance to see what happens inside health care facilities , allowing them to see if it ’ s really the career for them .
“ We can get our feet in the water and see what it ’ s like ( while in high school ) … instead of wasting your time and money and financial aid ,” she said .
HEALTH SCIENCES
The CTE Center is looking for more opportunities for students to participate in for the 2017-18 school year . Opportunities could range from job shadowing for a day or two throughout the entire school year or interning once a week during a semester .
