Beautiful , sheltered forest surroundings with views of stunning mountain peaks .
Professionally designed trails are groomed and track-set regularly for skate and classic skiing . Trails are for intermediates and above , with some short steep sections and rolling downhills .
Trailhead facilities include a warming hut with seating , maps and information . Knowledgeable trail ambassadors are available on most weekends and holidays .
Trail use fees and membership registrations can be left in the box at the trailhead , or purchased online at fernienordic . com / mobile .
You can extend your adventure and continue all the way to Fernie Alpine Resort from the Galloway Loop onto the FAR Connector trail .
Location & Details
The Elk Valley Nordic Centre is centrally located halfway between Fernie Alpine Resort and the City of Fernie . Turn off from Highway 3 onto Mt Fernie Park Rd , at the big Island Lake Lodge sign . The main parking is at the overflow parking lot at Mt Fernie Provincial Park .
The Montane area is just minutes from Historic Downtown Fernie , offering a range of beautiful trails for a variety of uses . The ‘ green ’ trails at Montane are winter roads groomed 4m wide for Cross-country / Nordic skiing only . These trails start with a gentle section from the trailhead , leading into more challenging hilly terrain .
There are 8km of groomed ski roads , with a warming hut at the far end of the trail system , 4km from the trailhead . Please be respectful of all other trail users and keep your dog under control or on-leash . Dog waste bins are stocked with disposable bags so you can clean up after your pooch .
Location & Details
From downtown take 4th Street across the train tracks , then turn right on Pine Ave . Continue past the Fernie Aquatic Centre and the bridge across Coal Creek , then turn left onto Montane Parkway . The Montane trailhead will be on your left with ample parking , trail information and porta-potty . Follow the trail and signage to Montane Hut . These trails are within private property with access granted by the Montane landowner , Parastone Developments .
The trails at Fernie Alpine Resort are great for both classic and skate XC skiers of intermediate to advanced ability . Offering a short and long loop , this tranquil area features flats and hills amongst big cedar and aspen trees in a peaceful landscape .
Be forewarned that the initial approach from parking lot ( approx . 600m ) towards the Silk Trail is labeled black due to the steep uphill section .
The trails are open and free to the public every day throughout the winter ski season ( Dec-Apr ) and are groomed on most days . In lieu of user fees , the resort invites visitors to stay , dine , shop or rent gear at their on-mountain locations .
All these trails are multi-use – XC skis , fat bikes and snowshoes are all welcome . Responsible dog owners are asked to pick up after their dogs and keep them leashed or under voice control .

8 km of groomed and track-set trails at the Fernie golf course provide some of the most beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains . This location is ideal for beginner skate and classic XC skiers thanks to very little elevation change on these trails .
The trailhead is at the Clubhouse with ample free parking , and a porta-potty provided by the Fernie Nordic Society . The trails are groomed and track-set on a regular basis by the golf course personnel .
This is also a great area if you want to try cross country skiing at night , as the trails are wide open and level . Don ’ t forget your headlamp !
The trails at the golf course are solely for cross country skiers and do not permit dogs or other activities such as walking , snowshoeing or fat biking .
