When I think back to the season we've seen so far in womens cycling, it's been anything but an anti climax. The Tour of Britain was a roaring success with Britons turning out in their numbers and lining the albeit flat streets of the United Kingdom. The riders loved it, the teams fought hard and the television coverage was comprehensive...
England’s world cup bid ended pretty much as soon as it had begun. Not entirely surprising if I’m brutally honest, but sad nonetheless. Sports people, including footballers, want to win. They need to win. Competitive, raw instinct is what stands them out from the rest, whether you’re Raheem Sterling, Andy Murray or Marianne Vos. Anyway, things are looking up for the season of sport ahead and with so much to watch and follow, I’ll be amazed if any of us actually have time to ride our bikes. I love the mutual respect and interest that athletes have for each other. Brad Wiggins was spotted taking in the atmosphere at Wimbledon last week along with David Hayes and a plethora of other sporting royalty. With the eagerly anticipated Tour de France 2014 kicking off, well now, we can all rest easy safe in the knowledge that our sofa sport antics will be recompensed with full-on sporting achievement, a catchy theme tune and the return of the drama that follows Froome/Sky that almost never gets dull! I can’t remember a year when who makes the Tour team has been so passionately debated. And what’s that I hear you cry … girls are racing? The Tour? The Great Tour de France is letting the girls have a go? Despite the banter, the critique and the for and against chit chat, for me having a women’s race on the Champs Elise will be one of the most exciting things this year.
