We could return to the very beginning of cycling’s existence to put this imbalance under the microscope, but to be honest, it gets rather boring. We know the deal. Men have dominated the sport, therefore the coverage and the lion’s share of the sponsorship deals. But, women have not been totally vacant in this world. The recent resurrection of Beryl Burton into the limelight has suddenly catapulted this strong role model back into the modern day. A refreshing tale of an independent, driven women who broke the rules. Man-made rules. Perhaps she was the Vicky Pendleton of her time? Did people feel threatened by her? And such an obscurity too – having this role reversal of dominance.

I hope that girls and women getting into cycling (or any sport for that matter) will cite these female stars as their role models. I hope they use Beryl, Laura and Marianne to inspire grit and determination. I hope they use them to prove that women can be just as controversial and game changing as the men. I hope that when the Tour de France has a full women’s stage race – whenever that may be – Beryl is still held up as a shining light for progressing women into this sport. But I doubt she’ll be alone. *
