Crisis in the Congo 1 | Page 6

What’s happening in the Congo, in my opinion, is what happens in a lot of countries where everyone is greedy and wants more money, more resources, more land, and more power. What’s also happening is that the Congo invited some of this in when they let in the 2 million Rwandan refugees and the Hutu militia (and Rwandan genocide directors hiding among them) right after the genocide. Why would Mobutu do that? Was he unaware that the Hutu militia was hiding among the refugees? Why would the Congolese people let him do that? Didn’t Mobutu think the Rwandans would come after the people who were responsible for their genocide? When he let the Rwandans in, he should have been

should have been smarter about it and not let them roam free. He should have kept them from pillaging and killing and kept them secure.

Where the U.S. went wrong in this crisis is when they started aiding Rwanda with guns, supplies, and most importantly training. They should have investigated what Rwanda’s plans really were. If the US hadn’t let the Rwandans come in and pillage the Congo, I believe the Congo could have rebuilt itself. What If the U.S. had helped the Congo instead of the Rwandans? Could the U.S. have helped them start a democratic government, not just put in another dictator?
