Most of us think that in a public toilet we
have at least some privacy and that no
one knows what’s happening behind the
door. However, you might be unpleas-
antly surprised to learn that someone may
be watching you while you’re doing your
business. All they need is a simple… coat
hook. Yes, one exactly like the ones we all
have in our homes and we all have seen
in every public toilet, changing room or
public shower. The only difference is.. that
the “dangerous hook” is actually not what
it seems and it has a very different purpose
to holding your jacket or accessories. The
ones intended for clothes normally have
just one hook but the treacherous hook is
designed with a double hook and hidden
inside them are tiny cameras which can re-
cord not only pictures but footage videos
and even audio.You may think that this will
be obvious to the eye, but let’s be honest -
who ever pays attention to the details of a
hook in a public toilet.

Another scandal which made the head-
lines in England in 2015 is the case when
a woman found a hidden camera which
was installed in the bathroom in her hotel
room. However this camera was hidden
not in a hook but behind a vent.
The “innovative” hooks are incredibly easy
to buy. Initially they were supposed to be
for home security but now Amazon and
eBay, for example, offer them for less than
10 pounds. The Independent Consumer Rights Or-
ganisation in the UK, Which, conducted a
survey which shows that more than half of
the devices we use on a regular basic can
be hacked. Studies estimate that by 2025
there will be over 75 billion items connect-
ed to the Internet.
In 2017 the 21-year-old Luke Whitening
from the UK was banned from the Mc-
Donald’s where he had been working be-
cause he installed a hidden camera in the
ladies’ toilet. Luckily the hook was noticed
before any real damage had been done. Be
careful that you can be a victim of spying Nobody knows how many people have ac-
tually succeeded in spying and never will
be caught. So, next time when you are
attending a public toilet - pay attention
to the details as it may turn out that the
whole Internet is familiar with your “toilet
routine”.
