Wallasey FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/CRICKETCLUBMAG Wallasey CRICKET CLUB W allasey CC has faced some difficult times in recent years but thanks to the hard work of their members are now well placed for a successful future. Cricket Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Daniel Beaver to find out more about the good work the club has been doing lately. Involvement He told us, “I have been involved in the club pretty much from when I was able to walk as a toddler; my dad was captain at the club and my mum would go shopping every Saturday so his version of looking after me would be to take me with him to wherever the team were playing that day with a bat and ball to keep me company.” The Role “There aren’t many challenging aspects really, apart from the fact that the standard of the league is so high now that every game is a challenge in itself - if you don’t perform then no matter who you come up against it will end in defeat so keeping our feet on the gas is a good challenge! The most rewarding aspect is the winning feeling whether that be all eleven players on the field for that Broadway Veterinary Surgery has been looking after pets on the Wirral for over thirty years. We are a very close-knit bunch and all local lads so it means a lot to us players and spectators when we get the wins.” Atmosphere “The atmosphere at the club is very good; we had been in financial difficulty in recent years to the point where we were unsure if the club could continue going. But through the hard work of numerous club members and volunteers in the last 5-10 years we have been able to organise regular big events for the local community such as fireworks displays and beer festivals which have really helped us. Thankfully, we are now in a much better and improving financial position which now enables us to invest more money in to improving our facilities and junior training setup. Last year our 3rd XI gained promotion which means we have all three of our Saturday teams playing premier league cricket which is something we are very proud of, our 2nd XI will be battling to win the league this year and the 1st XI will be pushing to bring home some long awaited silverware whilst continuing to push the top teams in the league. All in all, we are confident for an exciting 2019 season and a bright future!” Present “Pre-season preparation has been enjoyable. We had our overseas professional signed up very early in the winter which was satisfying. Pre-season training for us is really about getting all the lads back together and easing in to the start of the season with some light indoor sessions, slowly ramping it up to when we could eventually get ourselves and kick off with a couple of outdoor sessions per week as well as some pre-season friendlies. Luckily most of our players are very competitive so standards remain high whether that be in training or a match. Our targets for the year are for our 1st XI to break through the top 6 barrier in the league and bring home some silverware, preferably the Cheshire Cup; for the 2nd XI to win the league, they came so close last year and have a top quality side this year; 3rd XI having just been promoted have a strong side that is capable of competing at the top of the premier league; 4th XI to continue to develop the younger generation of players and give them a taste of competitive senior cricket.”
