Cricket Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Ross Mitchell to find out more. Involvement Ross told us, “I have been a member and played cricket for as long as I can remember, probably starting at about five years old. My dad and grandfather both played for Ayr as well. The relative success of three Western Union titles and a Scottish Cup victory in the last 25 years has been remarkable for a small provincial club competing against clubs from the city.” The Role “Having been captain of the second team for the last five years it has been interesting and challenging to constantly get a team on the park and mixing personalities of up and coming young players along with experienced players who are winding down from the rigours of first team cricket. Seeing young guys coming through the 24 Issue 49 ranks and putting in match winning performances with a smile on their face and the support of their teammates makes all the hard work worthwhile.” Atmosphere “There is a lot of excitement at the upcoming season, which will be one of rebuilding in the Western Union Championship with the chance for a lot of the younger players to step up and play a big part in the senior teams.” Off-Season “It has been an off-season of transition with a few senior players moving on to new challenges. However, the juniors haven’t stopped training all winter and that attitude will help rub off on the senior guys as we get into pre-season.”
