Bristol
CRICKET CLUB
Bristol CC were originally called Optimists CC and enjoyed much success
through the 1970’s and 1980’s. But it was in the nineties that the Club really
took off. As a leading member of the Western League, which embraced
Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, and South Wales, the club was very
strong and enjoyed much success in the League, regional Cups and T20. It
was in 1992 that the Club enjoyed its greatest success when they won the
National KO at Lords in 1992 beating Kendal in the final.
In 2001 the decision was taken
to become Bristol CC and the club
has continued to do well since
then. Cricket Club Magazine recently
caught up with Club Representative
Huw Ellison to find out more.
CC: How’s the general mood down
at the club at the moment?
HE: Optimistic about the season
ahead, whilst cognisant of the fact
that we are missing a few players
from last season. Will Young was
again our overseas player last year
and his runs and positive attitude
were a real bonus to us as a club. He
is not around this year having made
fantastic progress as a New Zealand
CC: What are the most challenging
and rewarding aspects of your role?
HE: As Director of Cricket at
Bristol CC, I am responsible for all
things that touch the cricket side of
the Club, but it would be impossible
without the input from several key
people in the Club including the
coaches and captains. The reward is
when we are playing good, positive
cricket. Challenges are many, but
thanks to the excellent contributions
from our Committee members, the
load is shared across us all. Sarah
Probert, Bristol CC Secretary, is the
glue that sticks it all together and her
contribution is most noteworthy.
