Malpas FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/CRICKETCLUBMAG CC: How would you say the off- season has gone for the club? MC: The off season can be difficult though we have used ours to generate income via social functions otherwise the club would remain closed during this period. Members have spent time securing existing and gaining new sponsors too. Revenue from sponsors is vital as we are all volunteers. CC: What are your plans for 2019? MC: The coming season is exciting as we aim to strengthen our place in the South Wales Premier league, introduce mid- week cricket at the club along with a full programme of youth cricket. All Star sessions, U9s, U11s, U13s and U15s will all be competing in their respective leagues. Our lady’s softball team is going from strength to strength and will again enter local competitive tournaments. Along with our Sunday friendly team we have a very busy season ahead of us! CC: How important is youth cricket to the club? MC: Youth cricket is vitally important to us and some of these younger players will eventually want to play senior cricket. We also encourage these younger players who are studying their GCSE in PE to run coaching courses as part of their PE coursework. This helps with engagement between much younger players and current coaches. It also builds confidence as it is challenging to coach very young children. We also put these young players through the Level 2 coaching course when possible and run sessions themselves. That way they will continue to feel engaged with the club’s senior and youth players. Younger players often look up to these players as they were once where they are! CC: How do you ensure that young players enjoy a smooth transition into the senior game? MC: We will use the mid-week cricket league and our Sunday friendly games to introduce them slowly into adult cricket. Once they are ready the Captains will meet with Chairman of selectors to decide the appropriate team and role they will play. It is a tricky transition as young players do not like the idea of merely fielding and batting at number 11. They are ambitious and enthusiastic, so we need to get that balance right. CC: Would you consider yours to be a community club? MC: We work closely with the local community offering local Phone: 01633 852373 www.chucklesnursery.wales Pentwyn House, Pentwyn Lane, Bettws, Newport, South Wales , NP20 7AE “We’re proud to sponsor Malpas Cricket Club and love to encourage more sport and activity in the local area.” Lisa Owen “We are still ambitious and will strive to maybe win a few competitions with both senior men’s and ladies’ teams and our youth teams.” 12 Issue 49
