CRICKET CLUB
Promotion on the final day of the 2018 season means a return to
top-flight club cricket for Cheltenham CC’s 1st XI after a 10-year
absence. Finishing agonisingly close as runners-up in the two previous
year’s campaigns made this success taste just a little sweeter for a
club whose 185 year history is littered with highlights.
1st XI – WEPL 2 Champions 2018
These include being twice winners
of the National Club Knock-Out, a
major force in Western League cricket
over many seasons, National U13
Champions on no fewer than three
occasions, and now a return to WEPL
Premier 1.
It was rich reward for everyone
connected with the club and, in
particular, skipper Will Simmons who
has announced he will now stand
down as captain after ten years in
charge.
Simmons took over the captaincy
when the club were relegated from
the top flight in 2008, and he has
now realised his long-held ambition
to return the club to the top table of
regional cricket.
The Victoria Ground
Set against the backdrop of Cleeve
Hill, Cheltenham CC’s Victoria
Ground can accommodate two
matches on the same square. The
ground also boasts a state-of-the-art all-
weather facility and over the coming
winter the clubhouse will undergo
a facelift and refurbishment which
will be enjoyed by some of the many
community groups using Cheltenham
CC’s pavilion as their base. The club
lists art classes, choir practices, dance
groups, a Beer & Wine Festival and a
Fireworks Night among a wide variety
of social events.
